In the early 1920’s Nashville had become a major distribution center for Middle Tennessee, Southern Kentucky and Northern Alabama. It was also the time when local businessman, James E. Caldwell, foresaw the need for a centralized livestock trading center.
After much preparation, expense and attention to detail the two-story ‘Nashville Union Stock-Yards’ opened to much fanfare as corrals lined Second Avenue and opulent offices were accessed via hallways decorated with Italian pink marble and trimmed cherry wood paneling.
This communal building; complete with a barbershop and Western Union office, prospered until 1974 when distribution channels rendered the property obsolete. The grandeur of this property was not lost for long because in 1979, after extensive renovations, the Stock-Yard once again opened its doors, as the Stock-Yard Restaurant.
Former offices are now dining rooms where career waiters in white tuxedo jackets and silver trays focus on every desire. Dim lighting and a decorative nod to the past creates a charming atmosphere in which to dine. Best known for their prime specialties which include; Barrel Cut Filet Mignon, Prime Bone-In Cowboy Cut Rib Eye, Bone-in Kansas City Strip Steak, Wet Aged New York Strip Steak, Porterhouse Steak and Prime Rib.
While this is a five star steakhouse other entrees are available on this very extensive menu. Delicious fresh lobster, other assorted seafood, pork and chicken entrees are available nightly. Very popular first course choices are the Oyster Rockefeller, traditional escargot and shrimp cocktails.
The side dish menu is also expansive but the five cheese blend potato au gratin is a patron favorite. The dessert menu is vast as well but the pecan pie and key lime pie stand out for those diners looking for a true southern ending to a sumptuous meal.
The Stock-Yard affords complimentary, private transportation to and from local hotels, offers secluded dining rooms for special occasions and they accept on-line reservation requests. All meals are ala carte and the Stock-Yard can be expensive.
They open daily at 5 p.m. and remain open until 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. They close at 9 p.m. on Sunday. The Stock-Yard is located at 901 2nd Avenue North, Nashville, Tennessee 37201. To learn more or to make a reservation call 615-255-6464 or log on to www.stock-yardrestaurant.com.
