The cosplayers head to Kansas City’s Planet Comicon in a two part episode, as Yaya returns to the competitive cosplay world and Jesse gives competition another shot.
Jessica and Holly throw a costume party and figure out what they will be doing for the con and they choose to do How to Train Your Dragon. And, it seems like the most amiable of the teams and Becky feels this is her chance to show her skills and prove that she’s on “their level.” You just can’t help but root for her.
Yaya decides to actually compete in the skit competition with Monika and Riki and things get a little tense as we realize just how seriously Yaya takes this competition and it’s understandable given what she believes is at stake for her. This seriousness comes through especially as they practice their group skit for the competition and it ends with notes Yaya has for the show.
Victoria decides to go with an original costume made of comic panels and while it was a really nice costume despite the last minute changes in the design, it doesn’t help her place in the individual competition.
Chloe wins her first competition on her second try in the female video game category. And, perhaps in one of the best parts of the episode, Jesse wins third runner up in best in show with his costume. It’s nice to see the guy who had been working so hard finally win something and to see that even though Victoria and Becky not place, they still seem to be very positive about the cosplaying.
Even after all these episodes of small glimpses into this community and showing both sides of it, the question still remains could there really be that much cattiness in the cosplay world? Or is this just par for the fabricated reality course? Because, from the point of view of the audience, you could see that Riki seemed uncomfortable when Monika mentioned that she wasn’t “worried about Becky.”
