Helping special needs kids know what to expect

Children’s books are great tools that we parents use to help explain new concepts and ease fears arising from new situations.  Recently, I had the chance to read 3 books written just for this purpose.  Avril Webster has written 3 wonderful books to help special needs children understand exactly what to expect at the Dentist, the Grocery Store, and when getting a haircut.

In Off We Go To Get A Haircut, the reader learns all about what it’s like to get a haircut. From checking in and waiting in the waiting area, the child in the story walks the reader step by step through getting a haircut.

Off We Go To The Grocery Store takes children through every step of the journey from making a list of what is needed at the store, to parking the car and finding each item on the list.  It is a great teaching tool for children who may have some anxiety about going to the market.

In Off We Go To The Dentist, children are taken step by step through a trip to see the dentist.  Going to the dentist is an activity that many children with special needs really struggle with.  Parents can use this story to prepare their child for a trip to the dentist and hopefully have a more successful trip!

These books are colorfully and simply illustrated and written, making them books great teaching tools by showing very clearly what activity is going on at each step in the journey.  It can be hard for kids to understand everything involved in some routine activities, and just as hard for grown up’s to explain it all.
