Hell Hath No Fury Like That OF A Woman Scorned ‘Sweetwater’ Review

Hitting DVD shelves this week is the western crime thriller Sweetwater. This awesome little western stars a great cast including Ed Harris, January Jones, and Jason Isaacs. More of a revenge flick than anything this stands up to any western film made in the past decade. The story involves a religious fanatic (Isaacs) who feels the lord has given him the right to rule the land as he pleases. He believes he is the messiah and will let no one tell him otherwise. Standing in the way of fulfilling his wishes are the husband and wife tandem on Sarah and Miguel Ramirez. In a town with a crooked sheriff and an insane holyman they pretty much get whatever they want until a new law man steps into town. The candid character of Sheriff Jackson is played by Ed Harris who is a no nonsense lawman who believes there is evil afoot in this New Mexico Territory.

First and foremost this was a standout job for all the actors in the film. The execution was flawless and made this film rewarding on many levels. The sheer insanity of Isaacs character Josiah is in full display as soon as the film starts. Try to imagine what Carrie’s (horror film) great grandfather would have been like and you may get a sense for what he was like. You would think after watching the first ten minutes that there wouldn't be any performances that could top this but you would be wrong. In steps Ed Harris who steals the movie as the slightly off but very likable Sheriff Jackson. It’s been a while since I have seen roles this brash and the actors that were chosen to play them were spot on.

After the story is established among an amazing setting we get to the grit of the film. Without giving away any spoilers something happens that causes Jones character to go on an all out war against the religious leader. Sweetwater has a little bit of everything. Violence, action, drama and tons of laugh all make this a very solid production. It’s hard to tell how people will respond to westerns these days but Sweetwater proves they still have a place in this generation of cinema. I was truly pleased with the film and I feel it will do well once people are aware of it’s existence. Let’s be honest not too many westerns out these days. As a child who grew up loving all types of genres of film Sweetwater gives me a new film that I feel I could recommend to everyone. People will be surprised at how sneaky good this film is especially the humor.

Strong performances, great laughs and tons of violence makes Sweetwater a great film to gear you up for the new year! I didn’t feel there were really any slow parts in the film and you contribute that to great writing. There is not too much mystery with Sweetwater as everything is pretty much in your face. Sweetwater is a real treat for any movie fan! Not since No Country For Old Man has a western had the ability to resonate with many viewers but I feel Sweetwater can do so. If you are looking for a film to watch while nursing that New Year hangover then pick up Sweetwater today!

Sweetwater is available now on DVD and Blu-ray. It is directed by Logan Miller and stars Emmy and Golden Globe nominee January Jones (TV’s Mad Men), Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Ed Harris (Pollock, A History of Violence) and Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter series). Sweetwater is being distributed courtesy of Arc Entertainment.
