Five Leaves is a restaurant in the Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn that is well known for being the restaurant whose concept was born by Heath Ledger. The restaurant opened its doors to the public in September 2008, with financial support from his estate, nine months after the late actor’s death.
Breakfast at Five Leaves is the perfect way to start the day. A comforting and savory choice is the “Big Breakkie” dish that consists of two eggs of any style, hash browns, whole wheat toast, and two additional sides such as tomatoes, bacon, and baked beans, and even steak. Equally enjoyable are the Ricotta Pancakes with honeycomb butter, banana, blueberries, strawberries, and maple syrup; or the Moroccan Scrambled Eggs with peas, crushed avocado, and grilled sourdough bread.
Tasty items include Organic Lamb Shepherd’s Pie with honey roasted vegetables; Risotto of Duck Confit and Roasted Pumpkin served with mushrooms, a sweet ginger sauce, and mascarpone cheese. Other meaty dishes include Grilled Gianonne Chicken with smoked sunchokes, chestnuts, and mushrooms; Braised Short Ribs with parsnip puree, broccoli rabe, and parsnip puree; or the namesake Five Leaves Burger with a fried pineapple ring, pickled beets, a sunny side up egg, and a salad or fries on the side. Other types of burgers offered include cheeseburgers with Gruyere, cheddar, blue cheese, and bacon.
If you enjoy seafood, dishes to try include the Mediterranean Sea Bass served with grilled whole wheat fennel, lemons, green olives, and onions; Steamed Mussels with a sweet saffron coconut sauce, scallions, and grilled sourdough bread; or Charred Octopus with anchovies, coco beans, jalapenos, and a blood orange sauce. Other seafood items offered are Flash Fried Oysters with smoked chili and cucumber relish, or market oysters with wine sauce.
Five Leaves’ desserts are simply rich, luscious, and delightful. Chocolate cakes and pies include Black and White Mousse Cake; Peanut Butter Chunk Pie; and other rich chocolate cakes. Assorted pies include Apple Crumb Pie; Blueberry or Cherry Pie; or the Toll-House Pie served in a deep dish cookie crust with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Creamy treats include the Vanilla Bean Sundae with Oreo cookie crumbs, raspberry, or caramel sauce; Tiramisu with vanilla mousse and cocoa powder; or “Tartufo” with is an Italian gelato that is half vanilla and half chocolate with a maraschino center and served in a dark chocolate shell.
