The Other Woman

The aptly named chick flick is one of those that rarely offers anything to the male audience. Every so often one comes along that tries to walk that line between full on chick flick and straight comedy. The Other Woman starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton, Nikolaj Coster Waldau, Don Johnson, and Niki Minaj looks to appeal to both genders, but does this strange relationship work or will you feel cheated?

The Other Woman follows a woman who struggles to get her life back on track when she discovers her boyfriend is married, but when she accidentally meets the wife he's been cheating on, she realizes they have much in common, and her sworn enemy becomes her greatest friend. When yet another affair is discovered, all three women team up to plot mutual revenge on their cheating, lying, three-timing SOB. Let’s be honest, the premise of this movie is stupid as no normal woman would ever do this, but that is part of why this film works. These are not normal women and as it moves forward it helps the film to work better. The first half of the film feels like a by the numbers chick flick and is a bit of a struggle to get through especially the scenes with Niki Minaj who just does not work. Thankfully once they get to the meat of the film it works a lot better. Leslie Mann steals the show with her over the top insane performance. Everything in this movie that works is because of her hilarious performance. Diaz does a fine job as well playing the straight role, but her good chemistry with Mann brings it all together. Kate Upton shows up late in the film and fits into the fold fine. This film has some laugh out loud moments and a payoff at the end that looks to be average, but saved with one glass shattering moment, but still never pushes the limits too far out of chick flick territory.

Despite the ridiculous story and some struggles to get started this film ended up working pretty well as a whole. As mentioned it maintains its status as a chick flick, but delivers just enough crazy fun to keep the guys happy too so grab your significant other and check it out.
