There just aren’t too many movies coming along these days featuring old school practical small creatures like Ghoulies or Gremlins, but the latest Bad Milo! looks to try to change that. Featuring a great cast including Ken Marino, Gillian Jacobs, Mary Kay Place, Patrick Warburton, Peter Stormare and one of the most ridiculous story in some time, could it deliver as much as it appears?
Bad Milo! follows an average guy who begins to get pains in his stomach whenever he gets stressed out and gets worse every time he tries to just bury the stress inside. But when the stress turns into a creature that comes out of his butt to take revenge on the sources of his stress it threatens everything he loves. This is easily the strangest concept to come along in some time that wasn’t a product of Full Moon or the Asylum, but works thanks to them seemingly taking it seriously. It is clearly meant to be a horror comedy, but they never go the stupid route, but instead the bizarre which makes it work. The overall film feels like something out of the 80s and is that much better for it. The cast all seem to be having fun with this little creature and the execution results in a ridiculous fun time. The rarely used practical creature effects and blood makes for an even more entertaining film that its sure to please the old school fans. The always great Ken Marino plays this role straight bringing some varied emotions to a role that could have been a throw away type of part. The supporting cast are all in on the joke and taking it serious as well to make a film that shouldn’t work for anyone other than Troma fans, but is surprisingly multi layered and damn fun.
This is a film that will probably only attract a specific audience but given the chance will find its legs with a wider variety of viewers. There is no doubt that this film will become one of those cult films that will grow a following over time, but those that are willing to give it a shot now are in for a lot of fun.
