Located in the center of the United States, some people might overlook Kansas as being the core of ghost sightings. But, don’t let those calming waves of wheat fields fool you. The “Ghosts of Kansas” (Schiffer Publishing 2010) are in abundance and harvesting manifestations in many of its major cities.
Beth Cooper, born and raised in North Topeka, grew up hearing the tales of the legendary spirit called the “Albino Lady.” She loves to travel and often reserves a spot on historic and haunted ghost tours in the cities she visits. This gave her the idea to start her own Kansas ghost tours. She and her sister do the research for their business, Ghost Tours of Kansas City, Kansas.
Cooper has interviewed countless eye-witnesses, historians, and paranormal investigators that have encountered the legendary “Ghosts of Kansas”, and made her an expert in the exciting field of the unknown. This reviewer, being a descendent of Croatian immigrants of early Kansas City, Kansas, took a special interest in the spirits left behind in the Heart of America.
Some of the haunted cities you will explore are Atchison where you can dine with ghosts at Paolucci’s Restaurant or meet up with ‘former’ members of the Elks Lodge. Stop in Kansas City and visit historic Huron Cemetery where the ghosts of preservationists still tend to the graves, or generate some school ‘spirit’ at Wyandotte High School. Visit the old Santa Fe Depot Diner in Leavenworth and have lunch with train travelers of the past, or take in some ‘spirits’ at the High Noon Saloon to calm your nerves.
Attend a ‘past performance’ at the Purple Masque Theatre in Manhattan, or witness some of the misfortunate souls that wander the corridors of the Kansas State Capital Building in Topeka. Topeka has several hotels, eateries, cemeteries and businesses that offer more stories of the supernatural.
“Ghosts of Kansas” features over 60 haunted locations that are open to the public and readers to visit. It includes various ghost stories from eight ghost tours across the state.
Let Beth Cooper be your personal tour guide as you meet some of the historic “Ghosts of Kansas” and their haunting tales.
