Hatchery Tasting Subscription Box

The convenience of this subscription box has once again proven its worth by providing a lovely assortment of gourmet ingredients I had so much fun trying. Hatchery’s innate ability to find amazing condiments and spices continues to impress me. I think I squealed when I opened the box and saw what they sent…the selection is diverse and every item useful. I spent a lot of time using these items in order to provide a thorough review. If you didn't read my last Hatchery review, make sure to check it out to see what’s so special about these products. One of the things I love the most is that the trial size enables anyone to sample products before committing to buying full sized items. The theme was smoky and spicy, perfect for summer grilling.

Causey's Sweet & Smoky BBQ Sauce: Used as a marinade, I coated chicken breasts with this sauce and let them sit in the refrigerator for about 8 hours. I liked the natural smoky flavor and the hints of tomato and spices. The creator is a lifelong volunteer firefighter and owns a restaurant in Atlanta, GA.

Calivirgin Jalapeño Garlic Olive Oil: This olive oil was delicious and I used it mostly for dipping with my homemade gluten free bread. It was a little hot, but not so much that it interfered with the natural flavor of the olive oil. I could tell that the olive oil was high quality and I used a little bit tossed in gluten free pasta with a little sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, which was excellent. I also mixed a little with balsamic vinegar and enjoyed it over a fresh organic spring mix garden salad.

Potlicker Kitchen Strawberry Chipotle Jam: We used this as a condiment on grilled chicken and also on a garlic chicken cheese steak. The strawberry flavor is subtle and leaves room for the smoky chipotle pepper to come through.

La Fundidora Fuego Salsa: Best enjoyed with blue organic tortilla chips and some sour cream. It’s hot! The tomato flavor is pungent and smoky. It would be really good with nachos.

Big Island Bees Ohia Lehua Honey: It has the consistency of raw honey which gives it a smooth, spreadable texture. I used it in homemade iced green tea as a sweetener with a squeeze of fresh grapefruit and it was wonderful. The bees seek Lehua blossom to make this honey and the flavor is delicate and sweet.

Ole Man's Original Blend Spice Rub: This rub is a blend of herbs and spices that was excellent on chicken cooked slowly on the grill. I also used it with the olive oil above, and tossed it with chopped zucchini and then roasted it on the grill. It’s also excellent on fresh ears of corn slathered in butter and salt. It would also be a great addition to a compound butter.

Check out their Facebook page,Twitter feed, and if you’re looking for photo inspiration, their Instagram page. Hatchery has made several changes to their website since my last review, adding links to recipes directly from the product pages, and a search function to find the full size versions of the box samples more easily. A subscription is only $20/month to find amazing flavors you may not have found on your own!
