'Harry Potter': A good man goes to war

It was ten years ago that we saw a little boy named Harry Potter living with his cruel aunt and uncle who were basically forced to raise him after his parents had died. We shared in his joy and uninhibited sense of wonder as he discovered he was a wizard, that he would be freed from his awful relatives and transported into a world of magic in which he was considered to be extraordinary. True, not everyone liked him and there was plenty of danger to be found but, when Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone (don't get me started on how Americans weren't considered smart enough to see the true title Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) ended, Harry was still an innocent and happy boy. Sadly, that didn't last. Harry's life has grown darker over the years. He's often been a very angry and bitter young man as he has had to confront loss and death as he has moved closer to a final, inevitable confrontation that has always been his unwanted destiny.

And so, after all this time, we have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Unless J.K. Rowling blows all her money on drugs or bets it all on monkey racing and needs to write another book out of financial necessity, this is the final chapter in the saga of Harry Potter and it's an excellent way to end his story. Harry was lucky that his creator made certain that his tale would be told by capable film makers who liked him and took him seriously even though his adventures involve things like wands and spells and wizards.

This second chapter makes up for the sins of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One, a movie that had too many scenes of Harry, Hermione and Ron sinking into despair while hiding from the forces of Lord Voldemort by camping in the woods. The sense of despair in part one starts to lift a bit in part two as they continue to search for the Horcruxes, pieces of Voldemort's soul that guarantee his immortality. They rely, as always, on plans that are equal parts precise crafting and seat-of-the-pants improvisation mixed in with a bit of dumb luck. They risk so much, these three, but if they don't do it then evil wins and both magic and Muggles fall to Voldemort. This all leads to a spectacular, final confrontation at Hogwarts as the forces of good and evil finally launch an all out war. That's all of the plot you need to know. Just rest assured that there is and end and that many of the questions you may have had over the years are finally answered.

This latest and final chapter of the Harry Potter saga is a great way to go out and does justice to all that has come before it. It can be enjoyed by both kids and adults alike and it will probably end up being one of the best movies of the year. you should definitely go see it.
