Music has a way of making you feel some kind of way; and bring you to some unexpected past memory or feeling you may have had or imagined feeling. Hana Kim’s album did just that. Through one listen of the album I was moved in a procession, an exodus of movement, dance and overwhelming feeling. I felt emotion and a message of a meaning bigger than myself. I felt love, praise, gratitude, forgiveness, pain, strength, confidence and hope all within one album. I have a new definition of music after listening to Hana Kim’s Exodo. Music is feeling. Music is not surface but has deeper roots.
Hana Kim’s album has an edgy, aztec, ethereal, grounded, new age and deeply soulful sound. Can an album be all that at one time? Yes! The persona of Hana Kim—the complexity of who we are as human beings—is captured in Exodo. Hana Kim has definitely lived, her sound is one of an aged soul; there is nothing naïve about her sound. She’s a mix of Sade, Adele and Corinne Bailey Rae, if that is at all possible. I think she has captured this mix and balance in one album. There’s something powerful about a woman who embraces all aspects of herself through her passion and talent; and Hana Kim has done just that.
My favorite songs were “Like the King Does,” “Ruins” and “The Sun Stands Still.” “Like the King Does” leaves you wondering who this King is? Although, I think I have a good idea from my previous interview with Hana Kim. “Ruins” brings you to the depths of heartache and pain and “The Sun Stands Still” brought me Closer to the divine. I cried. I related "The Sun Stands Still" to my own personal relationship with Jesus. If you are looking for an artist who uses her talent for a purpose greater than herself, get Hana Kim’s album.
