Penguin Young Readers Group has just released Halloween titles for young readers with many books in each age reading group.
Ages three to five years have a wide variety. This includes "How Big Can Your Pumpkin Grow?" ($16.99), by Wendell Minor. For this writer the big pumpkins that win blue ribbons at the county fair aren't big enough. He imagines pumpkins bigger than a house in a book certain to excite interest in young readers.
Also for this group is "Max & Ruby's Trick or Treat" ($5.99), the latest in the series about two bunnies looking for adventures. This color and activity book will keep young ones connecting dots and matching shapes for hours.
"My Monster Smells Gross" ($10.99), by Kate Leake, is a scratch-and-sniff book sure to please children who can't get enough of disgusting odors. In the same line, "The Super Smelly Alien" ($10.99) allows readers to scratch-and-sniff the secret places explored by Alvin the Alien.
Young one learning to count will enjoy "Ten Orange Pumpkins" ($16.99) by Stephen Savage. Share the antics of a mummy, a witch, a spider and other scary Halloween figures as they count off ten glowing pumpkins.
Middle school readers also have a Halloween bounty. "Creature from the Seventh Grade" ($15.99) spins a yarn about students who morph into mutant dinosaurs in the middle of class time.
"Literally Disturbed" ($9.99), illustrated by by Adam Watkins and written by Ben Winters, features 30 rhyming stories about all things Halloween.
"Undead Ed and the Demon Freakshow" ($10.99), by Rotterly Ghoulstone, is about a zombie being pursued by a horde of demons. Aided by a werewolf, the zombie goes to battle with an undead circus.
"The 9 Lives of Alexander Baddenfield" ($16.99), by John Bemelmans Marciano, is about a boy who transplants his cat's nine lives into his own body. He foolishly wastes his lives on reckless feats until he is left only with one. What will he do now?
For teens, a new line is also out. "The Madness Underneath" ($17.99), by Maureen Johnson, is about a teen who has a run-in with Jack and Ripper and develops the power to eliminate ghosts.
"Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" ($17.99), by April Genevieve, follows a strange man who rents a guesthouse in a small seaside town. Mysterious things begin to happen in town and people begin to wonder who this young man really is.
"Blythewood" ($17.99), by Carol Goodman, is about a boarding school in the Hudson countryside. Avaline Hall enrolls and begins to have disturbing dreams about a mysterious boy and a man who breathes smoke.
Treat your favorite niece or nephew, son or daughter, or just a young friend to one of these titles instead of the usual bag of trick or treat candy.
