Starring Brad Pitt
Earlier this year, “World War Z” was released to theatres. With Halloween approaching, those who missed it can now see it on Blu-ray. Make sure to have plenty of popcorn.
The film was based on a novel by Max Brooks, and it stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a former specialist for the United Nations, who now enjoys staying at home with his wife and daughters. One day, Lane and his family find themselves in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Because Lane possesses zombie fighting skills he didn’t know he had, they survive and are flown to a Navy aircraft carrier. The high tech carrier is the epicenter of zombie research. Lane does not want to continue probing the causes of the zombie plague, but he does when learns his family will be kicked off the ship if he does not.
Brad Pitt is, as always, very effective in the lead role. He shows that Lane is someone who very much loves his family and also someone who is dedicated to his job. Though he is reluctant at first, he eventually works to find a cure for the affliction that zombifies humans.
The film has a lot of suspense, and the action scenes are very strong. One of the best scenes is early in the movie, when the zombies first attack. The scenes starts calm, as the family is stuck in a traffic jam, and then they are quickly fighting for their lives. The scene may remind some viewers of the scene in "The Godfather" where Sonny Corleone is confronted by gangsters at a tollbooth. In "World War Z," the gangsters are zombies.
The story of the movie is a little familiar. Zombie apocalypses are increasingly common plot crises in movies, they have been featured in films as “Shaun of the Dead” and “28 Days Later.” But strong storytelling and first-rate acting make "World War Z" easily worth seeing.
