The City of Portland is fortunate to have a range of quality butchers to purchase meats from, but finding a good butcher in the suburbs is a challenge.
Shockingly, major grocery store chains have all but eliminated the butcher. Once revered as an expert in meats and cooking, many chains have reduced their butchers to meatpackers.
Meat arrives cut, trimmed, and ready to pack, eliminating the butcher’s primary job of cutting meat and providing customers with expert knowledge on how to cook it.
Upscale markets such as Whole Foods and New Seasons offer full-service butchers. The trouble is that these stores tend to be much more expensive than a regular grocery store, which makes them less accessible to everyday shoppers.
Haggen is a chain of Northwest-based grocery stores, with two locations in the Portland area. There is one in Tualatin and one in Oregon City. The store in Tualatin is located conveniently on Tualatin-Sherwood Road less than a mile from I-5. Hagen Tualatin is convenient for the communities of Tualatin, Lake Oswego, and Sherwood.
The butcher department at the Haggen Tualatin focuses on premium quality, locally sourced meats and seafood. The best part is that their prices are incredibly reasonable.
Shoppers can pick up Draper Valley chicken, Double R Ranch beef, locally produced bison, and seafood harvested right off the Oregon coast.
The quality is exceptional. All it takes is one glance at the beautifully stocked butcher’s case to realize that this team of butchers takes pride in what they do. The case is stocked with locally sourced meats; dark red steaks, plump cuts of chicken, eye-popping pork chops and a rich selection of premium quality seafood.
The butchers take pride in what they do. They cut meat on demand, clean fish, and cheerfully explain how the locally sourced meats are produced.
Haggen Tualatin is an excellent example of what a butcher department should be. The meat is beautiful, carefully sourced and sold with pride. The prices are affordable, and the service is friendly. There is no air of food snobbery on the part of the butchers; rather it is confidence in excellent product and a job well done.
In contrast to upscale markets such as Whole Foods and New Seasons, Haggen Tualatin delivers a better value, and a genuine experience.
Besides the butcher department, Haggen Tualatin offers a beautiful produce section complete with a nice organic selection and locally sourced produce, full-service scratch deli, fresh made sandwiches, Chinese takeout, impressive cheese section, excellent wine department, and full-service floral department.
Look for samples in the deli, cheese, produce, bakery, and meat departments. Hagen also houses a proper Starbucks right at the entrance of the store.
Above all, the experience at Haggen is delightful. The staff is incredibly friendly and genuine. The products are superb, the prices are competitive, and the location is convenient for people living in southwest suburban Portland.
