Greek's Pizzeria (Photos)

Greek’s Pizzeria, with locations throughout central Indiana, is one of the better pizza choices in Indianapolis. The franchise dates back to 1969 and has continually prided itself on using fresh vegetables, all milk cheeses, and hand tossed dough that is made fresh daily. There is nothing special about the pizza at Greek's, but that is not necessarily a bad statement. Greek’s makes a solid pizza pie that is consistently loaded with toppings, cheese, and just the right amount of grease.

The pizzas at Greek’s are by no means healthy or delicate. They remind you of a time when there was one neighborhood pizzeria. Before Poppa John’s and Dominoes flooded the market with circular disks of processed, in and out, bland, boring, corporate, rubbish that is considered “pizza” in name only. The pizza at Greek’s is greasy in the best possible way. Delicious little pools of flavor form at the heart of every large pizza. A combination of melted cheese, homemade sauce, and oven fired pepperoni juice: the result is an unctuous symphony of heart clogging wonderment. The crust is bold with just a hint of garlic and herb. It is crispy on the outside and soft, but not chewy, on the inside, and while the crust is robust, the rest of the pizza succumbs to the grease. This makes it difficult, but delicious to eat. The sauce is a nice and balanced one. Not too thick or too thin, it walks the line between sweet and spicy.

They have a respectable selection of standard pizza toppings to choose from and a small list of combinations at Greek’s. Do be wary of adding too many topping to one pie, as they are already a bit bogged down by grease and sauce. Keep it to one or two. The pepperoni and Spanish onions are perfect together. The pepperoni crisps up around the edges, and is heaped on generously. Also good together are the bacon and pineapple. You could go with the ham and pineapple, but the smoky bacon flavor matches well with the sweet pineapple. If you want something other than pizza, they do sell sandwiches and salads. The sandwiches aren’t bad. They are oven toasted on a solid sub roll, but aren’t going to shatter the world with their culinary ingenuity.

Greek’s Pizzeria is not trying to redefine the pizza with outlandish new toppings or wacky combinations. Instead they are preserving the legacy of the neighborhood pizzeria. Everything is quite good and made with quality ingredients, but nothing is Earth shattering in creativity. The folks at Greek’s Pizza make a very fine pizza worthy of any little league victory or Monday Night Football game. Cough up the extra few dollars and see what a large pizza is supposed to look like. Leo, Mike, Donny, and Raph would not have any problems with the pizzas from Greek’s.
