Great Lakes Brewing Dortmunder Gold

Miller Brewing Company likes to advertise that Miller Lite is a 4-time winner of the World Beer Cup’s Gold Medal for Best American-Style Light Lager.

Excuse such an ignorant follow-up question, but isn’t that kind of like saying Verne Troyer has won the World’s Tallest Man Competition-Dwarf category?

There’s no way getting around it, dwarfs are short in stature and lite beers are short on taste.

Now, for a beer with true substance behind the medals, look no further than Great Lakes Brewery’s Dortmunder Gold.

Starting in 1994, this Golden Lager is a 15 time Gold Medalist in the World Beer Championships, including being named the World Champion 4 different times.

It has won because it pours into a glass beautiful and golden.  A prominent head develops and remains as sip after sip reveals layer after layer on intricate lacing.

The beer has a sweet, hopped aroma with a hint of spice.

The taste has more malted sweetness and more hopped bitterness than just about any lager you’ll ever taste.  In spite of these pronounced flavors, Dortmunder Gold is almost perfectly balanced as well as almost perfectly carbonated.  And at 5.8 % ABV, there should be no problem making this a go to session beer.

Dortmunder Gold can be found wherever Great Lakes products are sold, including Giant Eagle, Five Points Wine and Bar, and Michael Charles Premier Wines.
