I wanted to give Coyote Crossing in Conshohocken a great review; really, I did. And the food was amazing, as it has been in the past. But as far as gluten-free knowledge, they (or at least our waiter) were sorely lacking.
My family and I went for my birthday on a recent Friday evening. Unfortunately, it was too cool to take advantage of their outside dining area. Unfortunate for two reasons: one – the outside patio is so pleasant, and two - it was just unbelievably loud and crowded in the main dining room. After a few attempts to carry on a conversation, we just gave up and spent our meal smiling at each other and shrugging. We also managed to score the lowest-talking waiter ever in the history of servers.
We had called ahead and asked if there was a gluten-free menu. The sweet young lady who answered the phone told us that while there wasn’t an actual GF menu, the chef would be happy to talk to us when we got there. Upon our arrival, we informed both the hostess and our waiter that one of us needed to know which foods were gluten-free. The chef never did come to our table, and all the waiter told us was to “just eat corn tortillas instead of flour.” Luckily, I had been to Coyote Crossing in the past and had a pretty good idea of what was safe for me. I started with one of their yummy margaritas, done just the way I like it: on the rocks, no salt. The Guacamole is always superb; fresh and green and chunky. I enjoyed the Pollo Enchiladas, which were baked corn tortillas stuffed with chicken and three Mexican cheeses. I had mine topped with the delicious Smoked Tomatillo Salsa, but they also offered a Mole Poblano sauce. The rest of my family (who don’t have to worry about gluten) ordered the Ensalada Coyote, a fresh salad with greens, pineapples, Granny Smith apples and pecans and the Chicken Fajita Burrito, which was approximately the size of an infant (!) and filled with cheese, grilled chicken, peppers and onions.
After we squeezed out of the packed dining room and got our hearing back once we were at home, we all expressed how sad we were about our experience. The food was incredible, but it’s so hard to enjoy it when you can’t talk about it to your tablemates. There was also the fear that I would get sick later, because of a gluten reaction, but fortunately, that didn’t happen. We will definitely go back to Coyote Crossing, but the next time will be a slow, quiet week-night, when hopefully, the chef will have time to talk to me about their gluten-free offerings.
