Grease (1978)

Playing at Penn Cinema as part of the Monday Night Movies Series on Monday, February 25, at 7:00 PM and an encore on Tuesday, February 26, at 10:00 AM.

It is the first day of school at Rydell High. The teachers are counting the days until summer vacation. The T-Birds and Pink Ladies are thrilled to be seniors. The T-Birds are car crazed, school hating, girl chasing, leather jacket clad guys. They are Kenicke (Jeff Conway), the leader of the group, Danny (John Travolta), the ladies man, and the three stooges: Doody (Barry Pearl), Sonny (Michael Tucci) and Putzie (Kelly Ward). The Pink Ladies are Rizzo (Stockard Channing) is the tough-as-nails leader, French (Did Conn) wants to be a beautician, Marty (Dinah Manoff) is guy crazy, and Jan (Jamie Donnelly). There is a new student, Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), deemed “too pure to be pink.”

Over the summer Danny and Sandy met and fell in love, but due to Danny's reputation he can't be seen dating her. While they decide if their relationship is worth fighting for, the rest of the gang pairs off (Kenickie & Rizzo, Doody & Frenchy, Sonny & Marty, and Putzie & Jan). Their relationships encounter obstacles and fights, as do their friendships. To the side, waiting to give advice or help are their teachers and their favorite waitress, along with a "fairygodmother" for Frenchy (played by Frankie Avalon).

In 1972 the musical, was written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, premiered on Broadway. It premiered the following year on the West End. In the 1990s it was revived on Broadway and West End, and again in the 2000s. The musical was popular enough to be adapted to film in the 1970s. The music and story are well-known and beloved.
