It has taken Oscar® nominated Director Alfonso Cuarón (‘Children of Men’) four and half years to create the motion picture ‘Gravity’. The result is a remarkable labor of love. Many movies promise an experience in the movie theater, but ‘Gravity’ delivers on this promise.
Academy Award® winners Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side”) and George Clooney (“Syriana”) star in “Gravity,” a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space.
Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.
The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.
‘Gravity’ is one of the most spectacular films to ever grace a movie theater. Alfonso Cuarón has created a method that allows the viewer to immerse themselves in the action developing on the screen. Clooney and Bullock’s race for survival holds and captivates the audience in a spectacular world created by his genius.
The breathtaking views of deep space are beyond words. The audience is able to view sunrise on the horizon and deep space darkness filled with stars and beautiful sites. It is truly an experience that infiltrates your soul.
As you travel through deep space along with the main characters you will find yourself repeating over and over that it is a movie to reassure yourself. It is so lifelike and real that your heart begins to race and you cannot help but hyperventilate as you navigate every twist and turn while dodging objects so lifelike in 3-D (IMAX®).
It is through the outstanding dialogue written by Alfonso Cuarón and his son, Jonás that we learn of Dr. Ryan’s personal tragedy. We also are able to witness the strength that lies within this strong female character allowing her to take charge of her fate.
In contrast, George Clooney as Captain Matt Kowalski is the strong male. It is through his character that a panicked Ryan is calmed as his voice allows her to stand firm and focus. Labeled as the jokester of the crew, it is his knowledge and experience that reveals his capacity as a leader.
This movie incites one to ponder several beliefs and ideas. One of which is what would you do when faced with grave tragedy? It also looks at the will to survive. Specifically, what characteristics would one possess to accomplish that task? Sandra Bullock’s character Ryan exemplifies attribute needed to survive. It is amazing that a woman is able to play a strong heroine in a movie when males are often seen as the heroes who saved the day (and the damsel in distress). It seems to unveil the knowledge that true leaders are those whose character within allows them to step up amidst crisis.
It is genius that director Cuarón cast and paired Academy Award® winners George Clooney and Sandra Bullock to star in this film. Both actors bring quality and authenticity to the film and give more than expected of any actors. Make no mistake, this is a first rate motion picture with Oscar worthy performances
‘Gravity’ is a mesmerizing adventure thrill ride filled with promise.
