Gratitude and hope - OLTL in review, November 21 - 23

Best Scene This Week:

Viki’s Thanksgiving speech made us feel as if we were right at home in Llanfair.  She made sure to mention the family members who were not present (though somehow excluding Zane) and even the like-a-family members including Roxy and even Gigi.  She easily made Shane and Nigel feel included while reminding the entire family of how much they had to be thankful for.  This scene was very touching as it was framed by Matthew’s narration of the day.

Runner up:  Bo leaving his office to salutes from the Llanview Police Department.

Eye Roll of the Week:

Though it might have caused a chuckle when Alex Olanov called Cutter her little “Butter” and commented on how he was plump “like a turkey” when he was a little boy, what are the odds that she would turn out to be his and Kim’s mother?  Oh, and can we please assume that their biological father is someone who makes sense in the timeline?

Eye roll awards also go to Mayor Finn.  She needs a little holiday spirit … or something.

Character of the Week:

Looking back, it was Bo who was the epitome of the spirit of Llanview this week.  He refused to make an arrest in the Victor Lord murder case without enough evidence, and it cost him his job.  He managed to keep his cool while the mayor was badgering him and Nora, and then championed his wife after she answered Mayor Finn’s hit with one of her own.  Bo sidestepped telling David that he had lost his job by putting David on the phone with Matthew, and assured Nora that turkey sandwiches were just fine for Thanksgiving dinner as they visited their son in the hospital.  Bo even calmed Nora when she panicked that she might have dealt Mayor Finn a fatal blow and encouraged her to call the mayor to check on her.  In the end, Bo and Nora toasted to “hope” at Matthew’s bedside.

Dialogue of the Week:

Mayor Finn:  I can’t believe you hit me.

Nora:  You hit me first!  …  You wanna go another round?

Mayor Finn:  You assaulted the mayor.  You understand?  I could have you arrested.

Nora:  Oh, well, it’s too bad you fired the only cop in the room, huh?

Questions This Week:

Matthew’s big brother David told him some “big news” but swore Matthew to secrecy.  Matthew said he would be taking the secret to his grave.  What did David tell him?

Why is Mayor Finn so disagreeable?

Who got the wish from the wishbone?  Viki or Clint?  And will their wish come true?

Fail of the Week:

Mayor Finn actually is a rather interesting character and seems to be a great foil for Bo and Nora, and though I don’t think we want to see her come between them by any means, it would be nice to see this character fleshed out so we know how she came to be Dorian’s deputy mayor, why she is lonely, and what makes her tick.  However, Dorian she is not and never will be.  Who can forget Dorian’s encounter with Aurelia Rivera?  Wouldn’t it have been interesting to see Dorian and her mother-in-law Nora in a slap-fight with Bo and David playing referee?

Success of the Week:

Thursday’s entire episode was amazing and a must see, eliciting sighs, smiles, tears, and apprehension.  The final scene was both torture and perfection as Matthew explained, “Mom and Dad with their arms around each other.  That’s my happy ending right there.  My name is Matthew Buchanan and today is Thanksgiving Day.  It was a day of gratitude, of joy, and hope, and wishes – lots of wishes.  But in the end, it was also the day I died.”
