In Delray Beach, there's The Boys (Farmers Market), The Girls (Strawberry U-Pick), and therefore, you have to count on the fact there would be a grandma in there somewhere. And there is. And of course, she does desserts.
Gramma's Bakery, the sweet third of the business trio, is a European-style bakery that's usually packed with people who have driven miles to buy baked goods. Sure, every grocery store's got bread, cookies and cakes. But Gramma's isn't the place to surfeit the average sugar craving. The slanted glass bakery cases are exactly like the ones you remember from your hometown bakery. Of course, there are strawberry shortcakes, made with berries picked right next door. And there is the famous Key lime pie, a dessert that brings them in from as far away as the Keys. And the chocolate-dipped cannoli shells, though meant to be filled with cream, are rich enough to buy and eat as is.
There are other attractions here, from the raisin breads and whipped-cream birthday cakes, to the onion rolls, challah and coffeecakes. With the holidays here, a simple apple tart or a fancy seven-layer cake will impress your guests, get you out of a time crunch or make you look like a hero at the office holiday party. Gramma's also features a number of Italian and French -style desserts and breads: baguettes, Napoleons and tiramisu. And the fun part of a bakery like this: you can buy a piece, a pound, a slice, a pie, or a cake, and if you need something inscribed for a special occasion, the staff can do that, too.
The store is small, and at times, keeping order in the chaos can seem like mission impossible. There is no number system, it's just a matter of whoever is next. Be patient; this staff knows their sweet stuff. If you cannot decide, ask one of them what's good today. And you may find yourself in a decision dilemma, because Gramma's knows how to tempt the eyes and the palate.
