Monday, August 19th may have been like any other hum-drum Monday until Grace Potter and the Nocturnals took the stage at Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, MA . The two and a half hour drive didn't stop some Boston-based GPN fans from buying tickets under the shed or picnicking under the stars on the grass at the outdoor venue. “Getting home at two o’clock in the morning is totally worth it. I follow Grace all over New England,” claimed one excited fan. Her excitement was validated when (adorned in a sparkly robe, with what looked like absolutely nothing underneath it) Grace started the night out right, beginning her set with “Medicine”, an upbeat and feisty crowd-pleaser.
One of the most interesting things on site, other than all the men hollering at the 30 year old sexpot, was the age range of the fans at the show. The crowd was seriously diverse. Of course, you had your young and “typical” GPN fan, but you also had children that looked no older than 6 and men and women that looked no younger than 60. This is just one testament to how powerful the band’s music can really be. When you’re attracting almost every demographic that exists, you know you’re doing something right.
Attracting a solid and diverse demographic is not the only thing that Grace and the boys did right, either. Potter’s strong vocal chords and primal yelps snatched and held the attention of everyone for hours. And as she held their attention, she made sure to pay tribute to past musical greats with covers of Heart’s “Crazy on You,” Elvis Presley’s “Mystery Train” and Pink Floyd’s “Time”. In addition, GPN’s incredibly talented guitarist, Benny Yurco paid his own tribute to The Who. Mid-show, Benny strummed a mean instrumental version of “Pinball Wizard” that had everyone thoroughly impressed.
Grace Potter and the Nocturnal’s next local show will be held at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA on September 6, 2013. She’s playing with another great, the Allman Brothers. If you’re not local to the area or you can’t make this show, you can catch her at plenty of different venues all over the United States. View the entire tour listing at www.gracepotter.com/shows. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals come highly recommended. So, go out, have a few drinks and let her and the boys make their magic. You won’t regret it.
