It was a fun and free spirited night as radio darlings Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox Twenty stopped by the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA on Sunday night as part of their co-headlining tour. The sold out crowd consisted of mainly older people than most concerts-goers typically are since both bands got their start in the 90's. The mood was light and although there was the occasional drunken yell and scent of things that are not exactly legal, it was an overall relaxing and enjoyable night.
Opening act was singer Kate Earl, a young musician from Alaska who moved to Los Angeles California in 2004 to begin her career. Although she has over ten thousand Facebook likes and recently performed on an episode of The Bachelorette, she received a lukewarm reception and many people remained out on the promenade while she performed Her eight song set consisted of Fly Away, Lock & Key, Ransom, One Woman Army, Wicked Love, All I Want, Honey and California.
The Goo Goo Dolls were next to take the stage, livening things up in the dark with neon lights and a theater marquis-esque backdrop. Last Hot Night things started, followed by a fan favorite Slide. The band also played Naked, Here is Gone, new feel good anthem Rebel Beat, the lighter waving ballad Black Balloon, Another Second Time Around, Let Love In, Come to Me, Name, and Better Days. Bassist Robby Takac handled vocal for January Friend and Bringing on the Light. Closing out the performance were Iris and Broadway.
Matchbox Twenty's set was also equally enjoyable kept the momentum of the night going strong. Parade was the first song, followed by Bent and Disease. Radio regulars She's So Mean and How Far We've Come were next, then 3 A.M. to which the crowd cheered excitedly. Real World, If You're Gone, Long Day, I Will, Unwell, Radio, So Sad So Lonely, English Town, and Bright Lights completed the list. The band came back out for a three song encore, which was an INXS cover of Don't Change, then Back 2 Good and closed out with Push.
The tour is currently making it's way around the US before heading over to Europe for a string of dates and finishing off with a special cruise on the Carnival Imagination in December. You can find out more about that here.
