I have been dying to hit up some of the new wave of sweet and savory spots invading the District. The sound of a sweet, sugary doughnut paired with crispy, salty good fried chicken definitely sounds like a good time any time.
My first stop was to GBD which stands for Golden, Brown and Delicious - a cute play on the main offerings served at their quaint Dupont Circle location. The location is a very warm, intimate setup that puts the doughnuts front and center when you walk in.
While I wanted to try some chicken I did not have time to wait so I settled for some donuts. Among the ones I chose was the chocolate iced and pudding filled doughnut. It was a square doughnut with chocolate icing topped with coco crispies and a cream drizzle filled with chocolate pudding. While the description was great and it looked like it was put together nicely eating it was a chore. The pudding tasted like coco crispies had been sitting in milk for a while and gotten mushy. It had a very unappealing flavor akin to something artificial or even a low calorie/diet product.
While I liked the idea of the crispies you expect that kind of topping to be crisp when you bite into it. They were moist and soggy in some instances which definitely made for a poor textural experience.
The offerings generally rotate throughout the week with a few being offered each day
