“Golden Boy’ CBS police drama is good character study

The new CBS mid-season police drama “Golden Boy” has moved back to Tuesday nights on CBS at 10/9 p.m. (Check your local listings). The network moved the show to Fridays & changed their minds because of solid TV ratings. Last night on Mar. 19, 2013 “Golden Boy” grabbed 9.26 million total viewers with a 1.7 million in the 18-49 demographic age groups. The New York detective show stars Theo James, Chi McBride, Kevin Alejandro, Bonnie Somerville & Holt McCallany. Last night’s episode called, “Vicious Cycle” focused on Don Owen (Chi McBride) who is the older more experienced partner of our ‘golden boy’ Walter Clark (Theo James).

According to the internet movie database (IMDB) the synopsis of “Golden Boy” is right here - “It is a drama about the meteoric rise of an ambitious cop who becomes the youngest police commissioner in the history of New York City - and the high personal and professional cost he pays to achieve it. As he's interviewed for a story about his career - Walter William Clark, Jr. (Theo James) flashes back on his hard-fought journey from street kid to the most powerful man in law enforcement.”

The “Vicious Cycle” episode begins with a nightmare that Don Owen has about a woman he is trying to contact at a motel. He pounds on the door of the room that unexpectedly explodes into flames. Don wakes up with his wife who comforts him. He is bothered by this nightmare that keeps returning in his sleep. It haunts him to the point of anger, frustration & sadness. Theo treads lightly around Don because he keeps making mistakes that are beginning to jeopardize his job & their partnership. There is a brutal murder of a young man Don had known & he aggressively takes control of the case from his former partner Christian Arroyo.

The woman Don was trying to save in the motel room was his mistress & she was also his confidential informant. She was killed in that explosion & their affair jeopardized his job plus his marriage. Now, her brother is found beaten to death near a dumpster. Don returns to the youngest sister who blames him for killing her sister. Arroyo tries to help & reveals to everyone Don had slept with the older sister. Don tells Theo the whole truth & their partnership becomes stronger albeit still brand new. They all come together to solve this homicide despite the anger that rages beneath the surface because of deep rooted politics in their division.

Don Owen has seen too many bad things that have corrupted many homicide detectives. He reveals to Theo the truth only when the time is right especially after his former lover, her brother & now their sister becomes entangled with more crime. The vicious cycle has to end somewhere & Don believes that time is now. Can Don get through this? Will the younger sister end up murdered too? Can this homicide be solved?
