The "Voice of Rock," Glenn Hughes, is back with a very personal experience for listeners. Glenn Hughes Live in Wolverhampton was recorded in June of 2009 in Hughes' hometown of Bilston, Wolverhampton. During the two-night event honoring Hughes' extensive catalog of music, the bassist/singer gave a nod to his Deep Purple days, as well as his funky roots with Trapeze. Those who are only familiar with his Deep Purple or Black Sabbath work may be surprised at the soulfully rich, Stevie Wonderesque croonings from his Trapeze days. Hughes' wide vocal range and quicksilver style are flawlessly conveyed in this 2CD set.
The first disc consists of some choice Deep Purple cuts. “Crave,” “Muscle & Blood,” “Don’t Let Me Bleed,” and “Mistreated” are a few. "You Got Soul" and "Love Communion" are standouts as a punch of sexy funkiness on this disc. We're also treated to L.A.-based guitarist Jeff Kollman, from Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats and Cosmoquad, on "Mistreated". He gives the song his signature sinewy groove. On the second disc, Hughes dug deep in the crates, introducing the receptive audience to songs from his pre-Deep Purple history. "Coast to Coast" and "You are the Music" were particularly rich in texture. It was a poignant night for Hughes because former Trapeze bandmate Mel Galley had recently passed, so the tribute to the band was fitting.
The 18 tracks are a potpourri of rock, soul and funk that take you on a joyful ride through the history of Hughes' music, showcasing his crafty guitar playing and unique voice. The 2CD set and digital audio were released by Eagle Rock Entertainment on February 12, 2013. It's a gem of compilation that exhibits an artist who digs deep to convey the passion and meanings of his songs. It's a must for any music collector.
