“Glee” returned on March 14 with the all-new episode, “Feud.”
This installment features a tongue-in-cheek look at some famous celebrity feuds, like Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, Elton John and Madonna, and Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync.
The underlying story, however, is serious. Will (Matthew Morrison) and Finn (Cory Monteith) are still at odds over Finn kissing Emma and Brody’s (Dean Geyer) big, rather dark secret is revealed.
Plus, Sue (Jane Lynch) coerces Blaine (Darren Criss) into joining the Cheerios but Blaine unknowingly turns the tables and has a secret plan of his own to end Sue’s “reign of terror.”
Will and Finn’s Boy Band Battle
Finn tries to reach out and make peace with Will, but, he won’t budge. He tells Finn he’s always been there for him and he broke the code between brothers.
Finn can’t feel any worse about kissing Emma and we can’t feel any sorrier for him. But, Will can’t let it go and so the New Directions gang suggests they try to work out their differences in a musical duel.
Who else totally loved Will and Finn’s boy band battle? Both groups had those moves down! We’d have to give the edge to Will, Blaine and Jake's "Bye, Bye, Bye" – the puppet strings, the fingerless gloves – it’s a 90s swoon-fest and we've got a front row seat! Plus, any time we get to see the extremely talented Matthew Morrison hit the stage, it’s a bonus. The number, overall, is the best in the episode.
Unfortunately, the sing-off doesn't fix anything. The gang suggests they hug it out. Finn is willing but Will resists. Finn backs off, injured, but graciously thanks Will for everything. Will is clearly convicted, but says nothing in return.
We get Will’s frustration. But, we really want them to get past this and hopefully, they will.
Meanwhile, Back in New York …
Our burning questions from the previous episode are answered: Rachel (Lea Michele) is not pregnant (whew!) and Brody (Dean Geyer) is a gigolo. Thank God he isn't dealing drugs. But, getting paid for sex is not a great alternative. We’re shocked, sad, and sort of feel sorry for him. Sort of.
What we really want to tell Brody is: Be a waiter. A bartender. Get a legal, above-board job! And, don’t keep this kind of secret from Rachel. We don’t know a lot about Brody’s background and people often find themselves in unfavorable lines of work as an act of desperation. (Remember Sam’s stint as a male dancer to help his family?)
Santana confronts Brody before she discovers the whole truth and things backfire on her when Rachel and Kurt ask her to move out. Naya Rivera rocks an amazing "Cold Hearted Snake" and we're reminded, again, how much we love to hear her sing and watch her dance.
Anyone who also watches “Girls” and knows that Ryan Murphy is a huge fan of the show, has to laugh at Santana’s reference to Lena Dunham’s invitation to come and stay with her any time. Wouldn't they make a great pair of roomies?
We’re shocked when Brody goes to meet a potential client and finds Santana waiting there to expose him – and she brings a friend – Finn!
Finn warns Brody to make himself scarce and he refuses, and claims that he loves Rachel. The two men get into a huge brawl and the hotel room is demolished. Finchel fans around the globe have to be sending up a battle cry of their own when Finn screams at Brody, “Stay away from my future wife!”
We’re still a little sorry for Brody, despite all of it. We’re guessing Rachel is the one person who makes him feel “normal” and allows him to participate in real life, outside of this gritty profession. Still, they both deserve better—especially young and naïve Rachel.
What’s going to happen now? Is Brody going to heed Finn’s advice and stay away from Rachel?
From the looks of next week’s preview, Santana spills the beans anyway, and Rachel looks devastated.
What will Rachel do? With the pregnancy scare behind her, will she look at this information as a sign to move on with her own life, without a man for a while?
Blaine’s Secret Plan
The second greatest musical number, hands down, is the Mariah Carey/Nicki Minaj sing-off between Blaine and Sue. Jane Lynch is hilarious as Sue gets on her Nicki – funky hair and all. Plus, Darren Criss just smokes “I Still Believe.” It’s smooth and infectious and we want Blaine to win this duel—until we realize he actually wants to lose.
Blaine’s secret plan: He’s going to take Sue down from the inside, as one of her beloved Cheerios, in an attempt to end her reign of terror at the school.
Things we love about this sequence:
- Becky (Lauren Potter) saying “B*yatch” to Blaine
- Blaine’s full name, Blaine Devon Anderson being spoken aloud
- Blaine/Darren Criss in a Cheerios uniform
- Sue in that Minaj-esque wig and outfit
- Becky and Blaine being named cheerleading co-captains (How cute is this?)
We can’t help but wonder what tricks Blaine’s got up his sleeve. How will Blaine take Sue down? Will he finally put Sue Sylvester in her inappropriately crude place?
Final Notes
We really wish Finn would stay to take New Directions through Regionals. But, we’re glad Marley (Melissa Benoist) helped Finn see the light about his future. He would make an excellent teacher.
Questions: Where will he go to college? Will he stay in Ohio? Go to New York? Will we see less of Finn/Cory Monteith on the show? Or, if he goes to college in New York, will he rekindle things with Rachel?
Cory Monteith has shown a lot of growth and dramatic strength this season. It’s nice to see Finn find his direction after doubting himself for so long and we can’t wait to see how things unfold for him from here.
Blake Jenner, Alex Newell, Jacob Artist, Melissa Benoist and Becca Tobin are doing a great job jumping into this gigantic show. We care about Ryder, Unique, Jake, and Marley and we love to loathe Kitty. When Blake apologizes to Jake and Unique and the five of them are gathered together alone in the class room, they agree about their responsibility to keep the glee club and all that it stands for intact. We know they are also referring to the future of “Glee,” our beloved series-turned-cultural-phenomenon.
Do these fresh actors and fresh characters have what it takes to carry “Glee” forward into another season and beyond? They've certainly proven themselves worthy so far and seem dedicated to the idea of carrying the torch.
Let’s hope we get some news for a “Glee” season five renewal soon. We are quickly winding down to the May 9, “Glee” season four finale.
