Gigantour plays to shifting crowd

It was obvious who the fans turned out to see last Friday night for the Gigantour show at the Aragon Theatre in Chicago. Shortly after headliners Megadeth took the stage, they paused in between songs as the stage lights dimmed, and concertgoers immediately lifted up their fists and chanted “Megadeth! Megadeth!”

The abrupt shift in the crowd’s mood was especially surprising given that Motorhead had just played to a tepid response. Then again, it is the Midwest where rapid and unexpected changes in temperature are commonplace.

Megadeth took advantage of the sudden warming, tearing through a lengthy set of material from throughout their catalog, clearly energized by the crowd’s enthusiasm. Particularly well-received were fan favorites like “Peace Sells” as well as newer hits such as “Headcrusher” from their 2009 “Endgame” LP. Another highlight of their set was opener Lacuna Coil singer Cristina Scabbia taking the stage and singing the duet “A Tout le Monde” with Dave Mustaine.

Motorhead’s set was heavy on songs from their 1983 album “Overkill” - the titular song,“Stay Clean” and “Damage Case” were all in the mix, along with other all-time classics like “Ace of Spades.” The highlight of their set, however, may have been a thunderous drum solo by Mikkey Dee, whom lead singer/bassist Lemmy Kilmister declared to be “The greatest drummer in the world!” Indeed.

Openers Lacuna Coil and Volbeat also played sets prior to Motorhead and Megadeth taking the stage.
