It came as no surprise that the first film of the Miyazaki at the Modern: Masterpieces of Animation, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was sold out today. I warned you about this possibility last week. Ghibli Studios has a large fan base and for many it was the first time to have the opportunity to see one of these films on the big screen. This special film festival is presented by Lone Star Film Society and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a story of a young princess who must find a way to restore peace in her land. In order to do this, she must encounter people from other lands and convince them that the only way to find peace is to stop fighting. She has a special gift with other creatures and very sensitive to nature. She understands that importance of balance between all living creatures. Like all of Miyazaki’s female characters, Nausicaä is a strong, brave and determined young woman with a gentle heart.
Dr. Pamela Gossin and Dr. Marc Hairston from the University of Texas in Dallas were on hand to discuss the history of anime and manga. They also shared information about Mr. Miyazaki and his journey into the film industry.
After the movie, filmgoers were treated to traditional Japanese refreshments including, taiyaki, mochi, rice crackers and green tea punch. This was a big hit with these fans as they are very familiar with these snacks.
Next week’s film there will be 2 film screenings with fun activities between shows. First on the screen will be:
