Let's be honest...
There aren't many places in Los Angeles that have live jazz and blues nightly. Most of the venues in Los Angeles have "jazz night" every other Wednesday, but nothing like the live music schedule at The Blue Whale Bar in downtown Los Angeles.
Almost nightly you can hear live music ranging from up and coming trios to seasoned jazz vets that have been on the scene since you were in diapers.
At first glance the place is a bit unassuming, a small restaurant looking building off of Onizuka street in little Tokyo. But once inside, you see that the place is quite nice and doubles as an art gallery with local artists' work hanging on the walls.
After ordering a strong cocktail from their super clean and slick looking bar, sit back and relax because the jazz is about to happen.
Instead of seeing a live act tucked away in the corner trying to play over noisy waiters: Blue Whale Bar offers the experience of having the music play right in the middle of the venue. Just having this little tweak in band placement makes the music sound much stronger, and engages your ears a bit more (science experiment?).
After your first round of drinks and you're feeling a bit famished, fear not because Blue Whale offers a menu full of food at a decent price. The avocado wrapped soft shell crab appetizer seems to be a locals favorite on the menu.
So if you've had a rough week, what better way to kick back and listen to some sax downtown? (pending that there is a saxophone player in the band, but don't be picky, it's live jazz!).
So here's to you Blue Whale Bar: keep on jamming and we will keep on coming!
