If you are looking for new places to run, hike or bike in the new year either locally or as you travel, check out the new iPhone app and website for the active outdoor enthusiast, localeikki. localeikki is a database of recreation locations that are publicly accessible and locally recommended. Local ambassadors helped to create key places, but the true crowd sourcing power comes in the utility that anyone can add a place that inspires them.

Users can easily search for local places to play via geolocation within the iPhone or iPad app, which is free to download until 1/12/14. In the details of each location you will find photos, a description of the area, a map, local tips and ratings from users. Users can find directions to the location and also quickly add photos of their favorite places right within the app.

If you are new to, or visiting a new town and looking for a running or biking group, localeikki provides group listings as well.

The name is a riff off of the locavore concept: loca for local & leikki means play in Finnish — play local. The business is headed up by Tracy McMillan, wife of the esteemed running coach Greg McMillan, and co-founder Taylor Thomas, in the hopes that localeikki not only helps people be active, but also encourages information sharing of great places to be active.

"The idea came from our own struggles as traveling athletes. There are great places to run around the country — it shouldn't be so hard to find them" stated McMillan.

The endeavor gained steam this summer by raising funds on Indigogo to support the final development of the website and iPhone app.

There are currently over 500 places listed across the United States and the plans to grow the offerings in the first half of 2014 include:

  • Grow the user base to 10,000, places to 2,000 and groups to 300
  • Raise $500,00 in angel investment
  • Release an Android app
  • Re-design of app & website (started)
  • Enhancement of engagement, gamification & user experience

This "Yelp for fitness" concept earns you instant karma as you #PlayitForward by sharing the great public places to run, bike, & play in your hometown. Through the end of the year, if you share your favorite place to play you may win some great prizes including a training plan from Greg McMillan, Kahtoola Microspikes or a localeikki swag pack!
