Get Fluffy by the tag team Sparkle Abbey (Anita Carter and Mary Lee Woods) is a fun read for the end of summer. The series stars two cousins who are disgraced Texas beauty queens who have moved to Laguna Beach, California to mingle with the rich and famous and their pets via their businesses.
Of course, for a good mystery, someone has to die and this time it is Mona Michaels, the owner of an Emmy winning Afghan Hound with attitude named Fluffy. Melinda Langston is the cousin who stars front and center in this book - the second in the Pampered Pet Mystery series. Mona and Fluffy have been clients at her posh Bow Wow Boutique and not always in a positive way.
With Mona gone, Fluffy's future and her assets point to numerous shady characters as possible murderers. Throw in an ex husband whose brother is in debt to the mob and a "friend" who really is a "Mona wannabe" and the plot gets ever so thick. Fluffy of course has her own agenda which includes being cared for as the star she is. The authors got the Afghan Hound personality down perfectly.
Melinda decides to take on tracking down the killer to help clear her best friend Darby - a pet photographer. Blackmail, murder and intrigue intermingle with high fashion and Melinda's pet Bulldog as many people angle to inherit Fluffy's millions.
A recurrent underplot in the series is the garish but valuable brooch that Melinda and her cousin Caro were left by their grandmother to "her favorite granddaughter". The cousins sneak into each others' homes and places of business to steal the brooch back. Then flaunt it in front of the other cousin of course. The writing is light and perfect for a no effort end of summer book.
The one flaw is some hit and miss editing but the errors are minor.
Get Fluffy is a trade paperback published by Bell Bridge books and for sale for $12.95. Kindle and audio versions are also available.
