The Monuments Men follows an unlikely platoon tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners, but they are in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, by the German army. Now they will risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements. Typically movies focusing on war, especially World War II tend to be focused on the battles and gritty tone of it all. With this film that tone is there on some level, but despite the circumstances it plays as pretty light hearted film. This isn’t the Oscar caliber type of film that you might expect, despite great performance all around, but instead a film that tells you this amazing story while keeping fun for the most part. Make no mistake, this isn’t a comedy by any means and there are some heavy moments but it also never gets as heavy and melodramatic as you might expect. This cast works perfectly together with each of them brining their own personality to the roles in a way you don’t get that often any more. There are some moments that play a bit slow, but never boring. Visually the film captures the look and tone of the time and really takes you behind the lines to join in on basically the greatest heist caper in history.

While this may not be one that racks up nominations, it is a great movie showcasing easily one of the most important times in history. This is a well-crafted film that should appeal to everyone whether you like war movies or not. If you are a fan of war movies or any of this amazing cast then you will no doubt enjoy the film, just know that it does not sport a ton of action, but plenty of substance.
