Gear review: The Leki Khumbu AERGON trekking poles

THE GEAR:

The Khumbu Aergons are aluminum alloy-shafted trekking poles that feature Leki's SpeedLock external locking system. The 3-section poles are also comprised of ergonomic Aergon grips and replaceable baskets. The telescoping poles extend from 27.6 to 57.1 inches and feature synthetic tips that flex up to 30 degrees to reduce stress on the pole shaft.

THE TEST:

Trekking poles might as well be considered mandatory hiking equipment in my book. I use them for casual day hikes all the way up to multi-day backpacking excursions. I used the Khumbu Aergons throughout the spring and summer for hiking and backpacking around the Pacific Northwest.

At 19.4 oz a pair, the Khumbo Aergons are on the light side for aluminum poles. In terms of durability, most reputable trekking poles are going to last, so I tend to focus primarily on the grips, the tips, and the locking system. The Aergon grips are edgeless, and very comfortable. They also help to position hands at an ergonomically correct 15 degree angle which relieves stress and provides optimal swing efficiency. The tips of the poles are durable carbide and the baskets are removable / replaceable.

The big plus for me however, is the Leki SpeedLock locking system. The red locking levers are easy to use even when wearing gloves, and feature the highest locking force of any external adjustment system on the market. In my estimation, it is the best locking system available.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

The Leki Khumbu Aergons are light, comfortable, and extremely easy to use thanks to the SpeedLock system. They are among the best standard aluminum trekking poles on the market.
