Gear review: The La Sportiva FC ECO 2.0 GTX

THE GEAR:

The FC ECO 2.0 GTX from La Sportiva is a low top, waterproof day hiking shoe. The upper is comprised of nubuck leather and 100% recycled nylon mesh. The lining is Gore-Tex/Dri-Lex Bristol 40% Recycled Nylon. The ECO 2.0 has a Dual-density ECO Trailon/ 2mm LaSpEVA/ TPU shank midsole and a Vibram River sole with Impact Brake System Eco-Step.

THE TEST:

I've had the ECO 2.0 for several months now, and have had the pleasure of taking them out on some of my favorite trails. Out of the box the shoes appeared to be well constructed. They were immediately comfortable and required no break-in time, unlike most hiking boots. The ECO 2.0 is slightly heavier and considerably sturdier than a trail running shoe, but lighter and more comfortable than a boot.

After hiking under various conditions and on a variety of trail surfaces, I noticed that the soles of the ECO 2.0 have exceptionally good grip; better than almost any shoe I've tried in recent memory. Something else I really liked was the durable, but forgiving band of mesh stretching across the shoes below the toes. This thoughtful touch prevents hot spots and blisters from forming on the bony prominences on either side of the foot.

The ECO 2.0 performed as expected in wet conditions. As long as water was kept below the ankle line, feet stayed perfectly dry during creek crossings and rainy weather.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

Sturdier than a trail runner and lighter than a boot, the ECO 2.0 GTX is a great all-around hiking shoe that excels in every category. They are comfortable, durable, and very well made; making them an easy choice for almost any hike.

I like their trail runners. I didn't even realize they made a light hiker.
