Gear review: The GoLite VO24

THE GEAR:

The VO24 from GoLite is an extremely lightweight, versatile, and "green" hybrid daypack. Considered GoLite's bread and butter pack, the VO24 was recently re-designed and upgraded. The pack is made for day hiking, mountain biking, adventure racing, and beyond. The unit is constructed primarily of Tier 1 recycled nylon, features an angle adjustable hip-belt, and is hydration compatible. It also has two side stretch water bottle pockets, 360 degree reflectivity, and a large capacity front stretch panel with a bungee cord lash-down system.

THE TEST:

I took the VO24 on several excursions, including Hamilton Mountain in the Columbia River Gorge. No bells and one whistle (built into the sternum strap), keep the pack light. At only 1lb 5oz, the unit is decidedly frill-free, but possesses all necessary features. Bottom drain holes combined with mesh panels along the back, hip-belt, and shoulder straps, help to keep the pack dry even if you get soaked.

After a couple months of testing, I noticed the pack had been relocated from my gear closet into my wife's. The VO24 is now not only her favorite pack for hiking, but has become her daily bicycle commuter pack as well. After 4 months of testing, the unit remains durable and shows no signs of compromise.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

The VO24 is a shining example of the "Less is more" ethos. It is lightweight, comfortable, and durable, while performing any number of activities. It has everything you need for your outdoor adventures, and nothing you don't.
