Sharon Reed became part of the news team for KMOV 4, a St. Louis local TV station, last year. Rumors show that Reed was fired from her Cleveland anchor position because basketball superstar LeBron James got her pregnant (Littal). Speaking of LeBron, he played an active role in the development of the newest basketball video game.
“NBA 2K14” was recently released on October 1 for the 360, PS3, PC and iOS/Android; it will be released for the PS4 on November 15 and the Xbox One on November 22. “NBA 2K14” was developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports, and it is rated E (Everyone). The genre of “NBA 2K14” is basketball simulation sport video game. Single-player, multiplayer and online are the major game modes in the game.
LeBron James of the Miami Heat is the cover athlete for the game. The soundtrack, picked by James, contains more recent music rather than older songs, a change from previous “NBA 2K” games. Kevin Harlan leads the three-man broadcasting booth.
There will definitely be more establishments in the series and its predecessor is “NBA 2K13”. “NBA 2K14” is the fifteenth installment in the “NBA 2K” series. The first game came out in 1999 and it is called “NBA 2K”.
People who pre-ordered the game received virtual currency, extra content for “Path to Greatness” mode, James in “Blacktop” mode and a signature skill in “MyCareer” mode.
Some new features include the introduction of Euroleague teams, a first for the series. EA’s NBA Live had FIBA teams for a few years but the game’s franchise was cancelled in 2010. 2K Sports and Euroleague have a multi-year deal to include Europe’s teams in future games. The Assist Pass modifier is also a new addition.
The only new mode is “LeBron: Path to Greatness,” which lets the player decide LeBron’s future, whether it be stay with the Heat or test free agency. The mode is fun but not as interesting as playing the opposite of this mode, “Jordan Challenge” in “NBA 2K12,” which gave the player the opportunity to play great NBA historical moments.
Like “NBA 2K13” “Crew Mode” and “Association” mode return to the newest game. Unlike “NBA 2K13” the “Dream Team” mode is no more.
Positives for “NBA 2K14” include core basketball gameplay, fast breaks, better defense, easy play-calling, post-up game, Assist Pass, Shot Stick, online Association mode, presentation, animations, player/crowd sounds/commentary and impressive broadcasting commentary.
Negatives for “NBA 2K14” include design, too much goaltending, players stepping or catching balls out of bounds, can’t save progress in middle of game in “Path to Greatness,” dribble and shoot mechanics too easy for veterans and too hard for amateurs of the series and the fact that it has no major weaknesses.
Metacritic gave it a Metascore of 86 out of 100 for the 360 and PS3 and 59 for the iOS/Android (The PC has not received a score.).
Even though “NBA 2K14” has some downsides, it is still worth buying, unless you already have “NBA 2K13” and/or do not care about basketball video games. For those who don’t fit those qualifications, this game is perfect for you and can be purchased here in St. Louis stores.
“NBA 2K14” is about $60 for the 360/PS3 and $30 for the PC at Target, Walmart, Kmart, Best Buy, Toys “R” Us, Hastings and GameStop. The iOS/Android version costs $8. The Super Fan Pack (PS3/360) will be available on November 22 and is $100. Check each link for store availability and pricing. A pre-owned game from GameStop can be purchased for $55 and Amazon.com has lower prices on new games.
