The St. Louis Rams have generated a lot of buzz this off-season, from trading up in the draft to get WR Tavon Austin, to spending big money on star players such as LT Jake Long and TE Jared Cook, to the record turnout at training camp practices and due to the hype of the Rams being a sleeper team in the NFL this season. Speaking of the Rams, they are one of 32 playable teams in the newest, longest-tenured football video game franchise.
“Madden NFL 25” was recently released on August 27, 2013 in the U.S. for the PS3 and 360 (The PS4 and Xbox One versions will be out in November). “Madden NFL 25” was available for EA Sports Season Ticket subscribers for three days starting on August 24. “Madden 25” was developed by EA Tiburon and published by EA Sports, and it is rated E (Everyone).
The genre of “Madden 25” is an American-football sport simulation game. Single-player, multiplayer and online are the major game modes in the game. Also, the announcers this year are once again the guys from CBS (Jim Nantz and Phil Simms).
Barry Sanders, former RB for the Detroit Lions, is the cover athlete for “Madden 25,” making it two straight years that a Lions player has graced the cover (WR Calvin Johnson). However, the PS4 and One versions have a different cover athlete: RB Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings, who was the runner-up in the cover player contest.
There will definitely be more establishments in the series, and its predecessor is “Madden NFL 13”. “Madden 25” is the twenty-fifth installment in the “Madden NFL” series, which is why it’s called “Madden NFL 25” instead of “Madden NFL 14.” The first game came out in 1988 and it is called “John Madden Football.”
The official announcement came on or near February 1, 2013 (Goldfarb), and the announcement that the game would be available for PS4 and One came during EA’s press conference at E3 2013. Infinity Engine 2 is the game engine on the PS3 and 360 versions, whereas Ignite is used on the PS4 and One versions. Pre-order bonuses were available at several stores with each store having different NFL legends for certain game modes.
The biggest change from last season’s version is the Owner Mode in Connected Franchise, which allows the player to take over the finances, stadiums and player’s/coach’s staffs. There are many more goals for a created player to accomplish in order to earn XP to boost stats in Connected Franchise.
Improvements from past “Madden” games include upgraded physics, enhanced running controls, truer player realism regarding animation, better graphics and playing fields that change due to the weather and the players running on them. Naturally, the next-gen versions (PS4, One) will have even more and better improvements than the PS3/360 versions.
Historic teams are playable again after “Madden 13” decided not to include them. Also, teams can relocate in the franchise mode for the first time since “Madden 09.” The pistol offense is now available as a formation. All game modes from last year are back. A new mode is called Skills Trainer, which lets the player learn key points of the game, essentially a tutorial mode.
Positives for “Madden 25” include upgraded physics, the “Run Free” feature, well-timed commentary, truer player realism regarding animation, better graphics, franchise mode and dynamic playing fields. The terrible glitch from last year where players tripped over one another after the play was over is now gone.
Negatives for “Madden 25” include monotonous TD celebrations, glitches in presentation, repetitive commentary, passing game is too powerful and the fact that it is very similar to “Madden NFL 13.”
Metacritic gave it a Metascore of 81 out of 100 for the 360 and 74 for the PS3 (the other versions have not yet received scores, of course). Even though “Madden 25” has some upsides, it is not worth buying, unless you are purchasing the PS4 or One game in the future.
“Madden 25” is about $60 for the 360/PS3 at Target, Walmart, Kmart, Best Buy, Toys “R” Us, Hastings and GameStop. The Anniversary Edition is available at Amazon.com for $100 for the PS3 and 360, which includes a full season of NFL Sunday Ticket.
