With Fall Break in full swing at the University of Kansas, the music scene downtown turned a little quiet this weekend. But that did not stop Future Rock from throwing down heavy beats and dynamic melodies for a small, but grateful crowd Saturday night. The Chicago-based electronic rock band combines the dance-ability of electronica with the aggressive strength of rock'n'roll to ignite fiery dance parties.
The show started slow, for a sparse audience of friends of the openers. The DJs on stage put together mixes of House music that recieved mixed reviews from their listeners. Some said they were glad to come out and listen to the combination of electronic beats, distortions and clips from rap songs, while others could not even stand to sit through the opening sets. The music was far from dance-able, but a couple of ambitious and talented girls used the empty dance floor to practice their hula-hooping during the long wait for the headliner.
Future Rock's three members took the stage looking slightly glum at their little crowd. More people had arrived by the time the band was getting ready to play, but the bar was still sadly empty. Despite the lack of audience members, the band played out a full-length set of energetic electronic rock to the delight of their devoted fans. The rapid-fire drumming drove folks to dance up along the front of the stage, while the bass guitar and keys harmonized and took turns reaching climactic, melodies. The band brought a dazzling set of lights with them that cast colorful shapes and patterns across the stage and dance floor throughout the set.
The show was a small, but fun affair for everyone that was willing to wait for the headliner's set. Future Rock would have gotten a far bigger party if they had come any other weekend. The next time Future Rock comes to visit they will undoubtedly have a better reception.
