Fun Fun Fun Fest: Four Tet

When there are three levels of fun involved, the only option available is to jump around and dance.  Fortunately, Fun Fun Fun Fest offers four colorful stages of music and spoken word for three days: all with opportunities to do just that – listen, move, and have fun to blues, hip hop, metal, indie, electronic, or comedy.  The first day of Fun Fun Fun Fest on November 4, 2011, offered sets by, among others, TV Torso, Yacht, Ty Segall, Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears, Spank Rock, Danzig Legacy, and comedy from Jake Flores and The Upright Citizen Brigade’s Touring Company.  In addition to these great performers, Four Tet played an amazing set immediately before Public Enemy on the festival’s Blue Stage.

While sound checks were conducted and bands played throughout Auditorium Shores, Kieran Hebden of Four Tet mixed on in tune with the audience’s sways and surges.  His style is truly one of collaboration and play as he patiently strings together rhythm and art.   A perfect combination of rap, dance music, and trance while connecting with the audience on a level where they are unable to predict what will come next, yet naturally feed into Hebden’s decisions.  His last two albums, “There is Love in You” (2010) and his mix,  “Fabriclave 59” (2011), is a mashing of 70s beats meets smooth folk with electronic layers that are unlike other electronic musicians – having a unique Hebden voice and feel.   His performance showed his dexterity and love for the fused sound.  Fortunately for Fun Fun Fun Fest attendees, Hebden orchestrated the combinations beautifully, never missing a beat.  Four Tet’s next show is during the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival on November 12th, followed by two shows in December in the UK.

The second day of Fun Fun Fun Fest should be just as unique and filled with synergy.   Performing artists include Future Islands, Wugazi, M83, GirlsNeon IndianThe Damned, and the Wham City Comedy Tour.  Head out to Auditorium Shores today and Sunday to catch each level of this festival’s fun.
