How many ways is it possible to die in space? The original edition of FTL: Faster Than Light proved that number is pretty high (even if most of them involve asphyxiation or copious amounts of fire), but the Advanced Edition patch manages to pile on even more threats to your crew's tenuous grasp on continued existence. Adjustments to some of the rougher elements of the first iteration - from setting crew stations for easier personnel management to increasing stores' inventories - help smooth out some old wrinkles, and the addition of dozens of new equipment options and new events ensures you'll be seeing something new from your first run, all things expected of a solid content patch. The new race introduced with the patch feels like an awkward fit when placed side by side with the others, but like any game with random progression all it may take to make a questionable option viable is a single roll of the virtual dice. Besides, you can always toggle the new features off at the hangar menu if they don't meet your expectations.
