Frozen is a movie that begins interestingly, but then seems to head into predictable, done a million times before, Disney territory. Well, it is a Disney film, but fortunately for the viewer, Frozen isn't just the typical Disney film. On the surface, sure, all the elements of a typical Disney animated film are there. There are princesses and princes and love and funny supporting characters and, of course, songs! However, it is in the story where the typical Disney elements are shed. This is what makes the movie much better than it could have been.

Frozen is a delight to watch from start to finish. My only problems with the movie were washed away by the end through changes in plot and character. So what makes Frozen so great? Well, let's see.

One of the great things about Frozen is that it is a relatively light movie. It is a movie filled with humor and fun. Frozen shows that not all great movies need to be totally serious or dark. It also shows that comedy can be just as funny in a family friendly movie as anywhere else. That said, the story here and the feelings of each character are to be taken seriously. The movie is not all laughs. It also has a heart that really makes for some powerful character moments.

The other great thing about Frozen is Olaf. Who is Olaf? Olaf is a living, talking, snowman played by Josh Gad. He is absolutely hilarious. Also, he is sometimes wise. Well, sometimes. Josh Gad brings this character, one of the most memorable of 2013, to life without flaw.

Of course, being an animated Disney movie, there are songs. These songs, to me, are the best part of the film. There is at least one that I know I will be listening to on its own because it is so good. Some songs are humorous, some are downright powerful, and all are incredibly well sung.

Frozen may not be the deepest movie of 2013, but it offers a more complex, or at least more realistic, view than a lot of Disney films. It is also a film that can be enjoyed by all ages. More importantly, it can just be enjoyed. Frozen is the kind of movie that leaves one with a good feeling afterword. Frozen is the kind of movie one clings to when in need of the kind of magic only a movie can bring. Frozen is on par with the best that Disney can bring and it is a movie I look forward to watching again in the future.
