'Fringe' 'The Last Sam Weiss' Recap and Review

As the second to last Fringe episode of the season, "The Last Sam Weiss" delved into what Peter (Joshua Jackson) and the team can do to save their world from the machine--and it doesn’t all rely on Peter. As we’ve learned over the three seasons of Fringe, Olivia (Anna Torv) has some talents of her own, ones that she hasn’t used in quite some time.

The vortexes that began last week are increasingly becoming a problem in Fringe "The Last Sam Weiss." Freak dry lightening storms are killing people throughout the Northeast. The team knows this is all about the machines being turned on, but how can stop them if Peter can’t?

But he can, according to Sam Weiss (Kevin Corrigan), whose history is finally revealed. He’s the last Sam Weiss in a string of Sam Weisses. He knows everything about the machine, including the fact that the destruction of the universes isn’t supposed to be happening this way.

Yet, there’s a solution for when things don’t happen as they should. Peter just needs a crowbar to get into the machine. Of course, this is Fringe, and the crowbar is anything but typical.

Sam helps Olivia track down the ‘crowbar’ inside a Native American museum exhibit. They open up the crowbar and...it’s a picture of Olivia using her powers of telekinesis, which haven’t been used since season one when she turned off all the light bulbs.

Walter (John Noble) believes in Olivia’s extraordinariess and her ability to turn off not only the machine here but the machine on the other side as well.

But as Olivia struggles to use her abilities by practicing on a typewriter and a mirror, Walter decides to give Broyles (Lance Reddick) a lesson in magnetism across universes. The machines are acting like two magnets, meaning if they move their machine closer to "Liberty Island," the pace of destruction will slow.

Except it doesn’t. Tremors start shaking New York. Luckily, Olivia unwittingly makes her abilities work by focusing on the phrase, "Be a better man than your father." She uses her abilities again, turning off the machine so Peter can climb in.

Peter’s life flashes before his eyes--which would have been a good synopsis of the three seasons of the show, had Fringe been cancelled. (Thankfully, they’ll be back for a season four).

But what kind of season four? When Peter wakes up from the machine, he wakes up to a city burning. It’s 2021, and it’s a completely different world.

This sets the stage for the May 6, 2011 finale, "The Day We Died." But who died? Chances are, with the way Fringe plays things, it won’t be anyone--or anything--viewers expect.

Fringe airs in Chicago on FOX Fridays at 8PM.
