A restaurant offering both French and Thai food may sound a bit odd but Origin in Somerville manages to do it well and delivers authentic, delicious cuisine from both Thailand and France. The chef produces a number of dishes from both culinary realms that will make your taste buds dance with delight. Offering both French-Thai fusion dishes as well as classic dishes from each country, Origin is truly a neighborhood gem.
Although French and Thai food differ in many ways, including ingredients and techniques, Origin manages to create a menu that flows seamlessly and offers options that will satisfy any palate. Appetizers include classic Thai dishes, like chicken sate, classic French dishes, like escargot, and original creations, like shrimp and crabmeat spring rolls and steamed mussels with lemongrass flavored broth.
The fusion theme continues throughout the rest of the menu with items like French onion au gratin soup and Somtum, a popular Thai salad that features bold flavors like green papaya, lime and chili. The menu offers a large entrée section as well that features Thai favorites like Pad Thai and Green Curry, unique items like Bangkok duck and wild boar prepared with chili peppers and Thai basil, and French dishes like pan seared ostrich in a mustard glaze or the classic steak au poive.
At Origin dessert is not to be missed with a menu that offers unique creations like the roasted apple crepe, fried ice cream and sweet sticky rice with mango, a classic Thai dessert.
Origin is a BYOB and is located on Division Street in Somerville. The restaurant is closed on Monday but is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday and open from 3:00 to 9:00pm on Sundays. With spring approaching, Origin also offers an outdoor seating section for warmer weather.
