Free Friday Flash: Learn to Fly

Until December 31st, the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy is displaying their Penguin encounter exhibit. To celebrate in the flightless black and white birds, here is a game about a penguin learning to fly. Max games hosts the flash created by Light Bringer. It’s predominantly keyboard driven (arrows and space specifically) but the menus are run by mouse.

In the game an emperor penguin discovers an online article stating that penguins can’t fly and becomes determined to show the world that penguins can fly, whether it takes high tech gliders or rockets. This sets up our penguin as the underdog and makes it much easier to cheer the penguin on as you go through the five levels by getting achievements and earning research money.

The music is cute, but after about the first three levels it does get repetitive. Sounds are not required for gameplay so you can mute the game once you get tired of it.

As you get a certain amount of achievements you can move on to the next level, which has a higher ramp. You can upgrade air resistance, acceleration, and ramp height, as well as buy better gliders, rockets and more rocket fuel to make it so you last longer in air and go farther. Your goal is to go 6,000 miles on the final level. Kongregate.com has an out of game achievement if you can do this within nineteen days, which is a bit of a challenge. Enjoy teaching penguins to fly!
