Wes Craven is a well known director of horror films. "A Nightmare on Elm Street,” which was released in 1984, is one of his most iconic films and now, almost thirty years after its release, it is still a satisfying Halloween indulgence.
Without high school students, the horror genre would be much smaller and this film stands out in the "high school victims" arena. In Nightmare, high school students are terrorized in their dreams by Freddy Krueger, a dead child killer. If Freddy kills them in their dreams, they die in reality. One of the high school students is Nancy, a typical teenager played by Heather Langenkamp. After a few of her friends are killed, she goes several days without sleeping. Eventually, she realizes she must confront him in her dream.
This is the first movie to feature Freddy Krueger, now a very famous film villain. He is a great character as he uses a glove with knives. Sinister props are a key component of these movies. Also, Freddy is memorable because his face is burnt, and he has a creepy voice. He is very well played by Robert Englund.
This is also the first movie to star Johnny Depp. He is very good playing Glen, Nancy’s boyfriend. Like her, Glen is an average teenager. Langenkamp is also strong as Nancy.
The movie is well directed by Wes Craven. He creates several memorable scenes, such as when Nancy almost drowns, while taking a bath. Another memorable scene shows a character getting sucked into a bed.
All in all, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is one of the best slasher films of all-time. It is a must see for any horror fan.
Freddy Krueger is frequently used as a Halloween costume. Details on the costume can be found at this website.
