Frascati, a blend of native grapes grown around Rome, is Lazio’s most famous wine. Fontana Candida is the most famous winery that produces Frascati; their regular Frascati is a great everyday drinking wine, especially on hot summer evenings. Easy to drink and very food friendly, Frascati is also great on its own as an aperitif.
Fontana Candida has also taken charge of raising the quality bar for Frascati wines. They carefully harvest the best grapes and vinify grapes separately to make their Luna Mater (Mother Moon) Frascati. Their efforts were recognizes and the Italian government gave it’s highest designation DOCG to Frascati Superiore in 2011.
Frascati’s Luna Mater, Frascati Superiore, 2011 is a great example of this newly designated Frascati Style. A blend of 50% Malvasia di Candia; 30% Malvasia del Lazio; 10% Greco; 10% Bombino is light golden yellow. It has aromas of lemon peel, peach, papaya, wildflowers and minerals. The palate has light grapefruit, lemon, mango, minerals and crisp acidity. This is the perfect wine for Miami’s tropical climate and cuisine.
You can enjoy this wine with fish and chicken with a tropical fruit salsa. The importers of Fontana Candida, Banfi has a great food suggestion on their web site as well, they suggest, “Luna Mater is the ideal companion to the famous pastas of Rome: Cacio e Pepe, all’Amatriciana, Carbonara, and, of course, Fettucine Alfredo.”
