We tried one of Firehouse Subs' recently introduced chopped salads from the Under 500 Calories Hearty & Flavorful Menu at a Fort Myers location and were quite happy with it. The Firehouse Salad ($7.49) has a nice mix of crispy and cool Romaine lettuce, plenty of deli-sliced turkey or chicken, tomatoes, small chunks of mozzarella, bell peppers, cucumber chunks, Kalamate olives, and light Italian dressing served on the side.
The Under 500 Calories Salads are served in a “real” red plastic bowl, which is a decent change from other restaurants that serve salads in Styrofoam buckets or cheap plastic containers.
There are three other salads and six subs also on the Hearty & Flavorful Menu that is being introduced at Firehouse Subs' 650 or so “home” markets nationwide this month. The Jacksonville, FL,-based chain had tested the lower-calorie menu in several cities beginning last fall.
We visited the Firehouse Sub restaurant on College Parkway, which is spacious and clean, and has a small flat-screen TV with no audio. The associates welcome everyone with a “Welcome to Firehouse”, and are pleasant to do business with.
