The fifty third year of the Fort Lauderdale Orchid show was unlike any other year. Orchid enthusiasts flocked to the show like locusts, setting attendance and sales records. Heavy crowds left the auditorium loaded with supersized shopping bags in both hands. Orchid flowers flowed out of the bags like a proud peacock. Fort Lauderdale holds the distinction of being the fourth largest orchid show in the United States.
Members of the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society nurture their plants all year in hope to win awards for their flowering plants. The juried orchid winners are located in the center of the auditorium nestled in elaborate displays. Tremendous palms and tropical plants frame each display. Certain groupings were sponsored by growers and the orchids were for sale after the event.
Orchid growers had booths around the center displays where you could purchase fully flowering orchids or smaller plants that will flower a few years down the road. The fully blooming orchids command the highest prices, while the smaller immature plants can be purchased for much less. Vendors sold all the necessary supplies to maintain orchids, such as orchid growing medium, containers and hooks.
Orchid growers as far away as Taiwan and Hawaii came to showcase and sell their prized plants. With another big show the next week in Miami the Tamiami Orchid Show, it was worth their while to make the big trip.
