Home of the NCAA Champion Augusta State golf team, and a Donald Ross original with help by Arnold Palmer, there certainly is a good pedigree for this course so near to its famous neighbor.
I am not sure that the course was overseeded, the fairways were nice and firm and the greens fast and firm, they were painting the new years fertilizer on the fairways and greens, so it could be a great paint job. Either way the course was in good shape for the time of year. As you might expect from a course set up for a top college program, it does not get much better.
Rating TTTT Green Speed Fast
Donald Ross is not one of the all time greats for nothing, this is a tough long course, but fair. Keep it in play and you have a chance to score. The terrain is tough, many uphill and downhill holes. Club selection is critical and with the elevation difficult. The greens are firm, large and undulating. Some putts can be downright wicked.
A big practice range for the public, practice putting and chipping greens, but make it to school, and you get a state of the art year round range. The clubhouse is huge and well appointed. The only detraction is the grill closed a little early.
Well worth the trip, and the trip down Washington road afterword, despite the traffic, there are several restaurants near the National. But avoid golf in this area during the Masters, you will pay a premium for the same golf.
